Melanie M. Valerio, also known in some media beginning in the late 1990's as Melanie Valerio Thomas is an American former competition swimmer who competed for the University of Virginia and was a 1996 Atlanta Olympic gold medalist in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay. A strong performer in international meets, between 1993-1997 she captured four freestyle relay gold medals at the Pan Pacific Championships and won a fifth gold in the world championships in Perth, Australia in 1998. Utilizing her 2000 Masters in Exercise Physiology from Virginia in her professional career, she has worked as a swim coach, fitness trainer, and in the field of pharmaceutical testing.
