Spanish poet (1919–2012)
A Spanish poet who spent nearly a century writing — born in 1919, published through the Franco years and beyond, died at 92 having outlasted the regime that shaped her early work.
Aurora Matilde Gómez Camus was born in Cantabria on 26 September 1919, into a Spain that would soon convulse. She became a poet, writing through dictatorship and democracy alike, and later turned to non-fiction as well. Her work spanned decades of Spanish literary life, from the post-Civil War silence into the open air of the late 20th century. She kept writing into old age. She died on 28 April 2012, at 92.
