About this person
Her parents prayed for a child; God answered, but her father Imran died before she was born. Raised in the Temple by her maternal uncle Zechariah, she received messages through the archangel Gabriel: she had conceived miraculously, still a virgin, by divine spirit. The child's name would be Jesus - the Christ, the Promised Messiah. Orthodox belief held the virgin birth as fact, and traditional Islam largely agreed she remained untouched by men throughout her life, her purity noted in the text itself. She stands as one of the four ladies of heaven, alongside Fatima, Asiya wife of Pharaoh, and Khadija first wife of Muhammad.
