Mariya Zakharovna Shcherbachenko was a combat medic in the Red Army during World War II, referred to by the Soviets as the Great Patriotic War. She was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union on 23 October 1943 for being one of the first 13 soldiers to cross the Dnieper.
