Mariela Castro Espín was born 27 July 1962 to Raúl Castro and Vilma Espín, a feminist and revolutionary, making her niece to Fidel Castro. She became director of the Cuban National Center for Sex Education in Havana and later led the National Commission for Comprehensive Attention to Transsexual People.
