Polish aristocrat (1786-1817)
A Polish noblewoman who became Napoleon's mistress not for romance but for statecraft — she leveraged proximity to the emperor to press the case for an independent Poland.
Marie Walewska was born Maria Łączyńska on 7 December 1786 into Polish nobility. She entered Napoleon I's court and used the position to lobby him toward supporting Polish independence, turning personal influence into political work. After Napoleon's fall, she married Philippe Antoine d'Ornano, a prominent officer in the emperor's army. She died on 11 December 1817, four days past her thirty-first birthday.
