Maria Vladimirovna Zakharova was born on 24 December 1975 and trained as a historian, earning a Candidate of Sciences degree - Russia's equivalent of a PhD. She entered the diplomatic corps and rose through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, eventually landing the director role of its information and press department. In 2015 she became the ministry's official spokeswoman, the face and voice that fields questions, frames narratives, and responds to international crisis from behind the ministry lectern. The position has kept her at the center of every major geopolitical storm involving Russia for nearly a decade.
