Catholic Saint and Mystic (1647-1690)
A 17th-century French nun who reported private visions and turned them into one of Catholicism's most enduring devotional practices — the reverence of Christ's physical heart as symbol of divine love.
Margaret Mary Alacoque was born in France on 22 July 1647. She entered the Visitation order as a nun and claimed to experience mystical visions during her religious life. From these private experiences she shaped and promoted what became the modern form of Sacred Heart devotion — a practice centering on Jesus's heart as an emblem of his love for humanity. The devotion she championed spread far beyond her convent walls and took root across the Catholic world. She died on 17 October 1690, having spent her last years advancing the spiritual practice that would long outlast her.
