Maki Goto grew up in Edogawa, Tokyo, and joined Morning Musume in 1999, carrying the weight of being the only new recruit in the group's third generation. Her debut with the group on "Love Machine" hit number one and crossed a million sales, and she became the lead vocalist until she graduated in 2002. She launched her solo career while still in the group - "Ai no Bakayarō" topped the charts in 2001, and her first album Makking Gold 1 arrived in 2003 at number four. She left Hello! Project in 2007, announced at her G-Emotion II concert, then signed with Rhythm Zone in 2008 and surfaced at A-nation '08. A brief detour as Sweet Black feat. Maki Goto in 2009 gave way to a transfer to Avex Trax in 2010, where her mini-album One marked the official return.
