On 16 September 2022, 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, also known as Jina Amini, was arrested by Iran's religious morality police for allegedly not wearing the hijab in accordance with government standards. Authorities claimed she suffered a heart attack at the station and fell into a coma, but eyewitnesses detained with her reported she had been severely beaten.
