On 16 September 2022, 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, also known as Jina Amini, was arrested by Iran's religious morality police for allegedly not wearing the hijab in accordance with government standards. Authorities claimed she suffered a heart attack at the station and fell into a coma, but eyewitnesses detained with her reported she had been severely beaten. She died in a Tehran hospital under suspicious circumstances; leaked medical scans suggested cerebral hemorrhage or stroke from head injuries. The protests that followed became more widespread than those of 2009, 2017, and 2019. By December 2022, Iranian security forces had killed at least 476 people across the country, firing live ammunition and beating demonstrators with batons. Her death rooted in her Kurdish background became the catalyst for the Woman, Life, Freedom movement, as women removed their hijab in the streets and cut their hair in defiance.
