About

Born in Gallaecia, Magnus Maximus rose through the ranks as an officer in Britain under Theodosius the Elder during the Great Conspiracy. In 383, his troops proclaimed him emperor in Britannia; by the next year he controlled Gaul as well, while Gratian's brother Valentinian II held the rest. Gratian himself was dead—Maximus had usurped the throne. For four years the empire stood divided. Then in 387 ambition drove Maximus south into Italy. Theodosius I met him at the Battle of Poetovio in 388 and crushed him. Maximus was executed on 28 August that year. Some historians mark his death as the mo…
