Ludvík Svoboda was born on 25 November 1895 and built his reputation across both World Wars, where his service earned him standing as a national hero in Czech eyes. That battlefield credibility carried him into politics, and in 1968 he became president of Czechoslovakia - a post he would hold through the Soviet intervention and the tightening that came after. He remained in office until 1975. Svoboda died on 20 September 1979.
