Born 3 November AD 39 in Corduba, Hispania Baetica, Marcus Annaeus Lucanus arrived in Rome young and wrote with a speed that unnerved his peers. His epic Pharsalia strips away the usual mythic machinery: it tracks the civil war between Caesar and Pompey as raw political catastrophe, Rome tearing itself apart with no divine plan to soften the blow. The poem made him one of the outstanding figures of the Imperial Latin period, but the speed and the boldness caught the wrong attention. On 30 April AD 65, still only 25, Lucan died - a casualty of the Pisonian conspiracy, his name tangled with those who tried to kill Nero.
