She was the last person alive who could actually remember the Titanic going down - not an infant pulled from the water, but someone who carried the night in her mind for nearly a century.

About this person

Lillian Gertrud Asplund was born October 21, 1906, and boarded the Titanic as a five-year-old. She survived the sinking on April 15, 1912, while most of her family did not. She went on to work as a secretarial worker in America and lived a long, quiet life far from the spotlight. By the time she died on May 6, 2006 - five months shy of her hundredth birthday - she was the last American survivor of the disaster and the only one left who still held living memory of that night.
