Duke of Lorraine, Bar and of Teschen
He ruled a duchy caught between France and the Holy Roman Empire, but his real legacy was genetic: every Habsburg emperor who followed — including the last Austro-Hungarian rulers — descended from his son.
Leopold was born on 11 September 1679 and became Duke of Lorraine and Bar in 1690, holding the title until his death on 27 March 1729. His nickname, "the Good," stuck in his own time, though history remembers him less for what he did than for who came after. His son Francis Stephen married into the Habsburg line, and from that union flowed every Emperor of Austria who followed. Leopold died on 27 March 1729, having turned a regional dukedom into the root of an imperial bloodline.
