Leon Zaven Surmelian was an Armenian-American writer. Surmelian moved to America in 1922, and authored three major works throughout his lifetime. A survivor of the Armenian genocide, Surmelian published his first English book, I Ask You, Ladies and Gentlemen in 1945.

A survivor of the Armenian genocide, Surmelian published his first English book, I Ask You, Ladies and Gentlemen in 1945. He is also well known for translating the Armenian epic Daredevils of Sassoun into English.
