Carnot was elected to the National Convention in 1792 and joined the Committee of Public Safety a year later, where he directed France's war effort and imposed the levée en masse — mass conscription — that transformed a collapsing revolutionary force into what would become the Grande Armée. His reforms earned him the title "Organizer of Victory" during the battles of 1793–94, but growing disgust with Montagnard radicalism led him to break with Robespierre and help orchestrate the coup of 9 Thermidor and the execution that followed.
