Born in Mughalsarai in 1904, Shastri left school to join the non-cooperation movement, dropped his caste surname, and spent the 1920s working under Gandhi's influence for independence and Harijan welfare. After 1947 he rose through union ministries under Nehru, serving as home minister from 1961 to 1963 before becoming prime minister in 1964. In office he backed the Amul milk co-operative and founded the National Dairy Development Board to drive milk production, then launched the Green Revolution in 1965 to boost food grain output across Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh. He led India through the 1965 war with Pakistan; the Tashkent Declaration ended it on 10 January 1966, and he died the next day.
