He was the doctoral advisor of 16 students, including Wolfgang Bibel, Wolfgang Maaß, Wolfram Pohlers, and Martin Wirsing. He made important contributions to the proof theory of systems with the ω-rule, and made progress towards solving Takeuti's conjecture.
