About this person
Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli, born 22 February 1952, rose through Nepal's communist party CPN (UML) to become its chairman in 2014. His first term as prime minister began in 2015, shaped by opposition to India's blockade of Nepal - he answered by strengthening trade ties with China, reorienting a relationship that had leaned on India for generations. He served again from 2018 to 2021, and returned in 2024, all three tenures marked by sharp-tongued public remarks, clashes with critics and journalists, and accusations of cronyism, corruption, nepotism, and racism. In 2025, during youth-led anti-corruption protests, his government's forces killed students. He was overthrown soon after.
