Biography
About
Khamtai Siphandone joined the Indochinese Communist Party in 1954, two decades before Laos became a one-party state. By 1956 he was on the Central Committee of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party. He rose to chairman in 1992, then added the presidency in 1998. For eight years he held both titles, steering a landlocked country through the tension between socialist orthodoxy and the need to open markets. In 2006 he stepped aside for Choummaly Sayasone. He died on 2 April 2025, aged 101.
