Born Olufemi Sanyaolu on 10 January 1968, he grew up steeped in Yoruba music and soul before forging a sound no genre could quite hold. The guitar became his laboratory: he adapted the slapping attack bassists use, making the instrument punch and snap like a rhythm section. That percussive right hand, combined with blues bite and funk's jagged edge, became what he named Blufunk - a word and a world of his own. The style carried his Nigerian roots forward without nostalgia, raw and modern at once. It made him a singular voice, impossible to file neatly away.
