Something wrong? She turned the short story into a scalpel - spare, nervy, modernist - and did it from the far edge of the empire. New Zealand-born, Europe-bound at 19, she carved out anxiety and desire in prose that still cuts, published now in 25 languages.

Kathleen Beauchamp grew up on Tinakori Road in Wellington, third child in a comfortable family, schooled in Karori and later at the elite Fitzherbert Terrace School. There she befriended Maata Mahupuku, a muse and likely lover whose pull shaped early work. At 19 she left New Zealand for England and never went back, writing under Katherine Mansfield and circling the Bloomsbury set - D. H. Lawrence, Virginia Woolf, Lady Ottoline Morrell. Her stories probed sexuality, faith, dread, and what it meant to carry a young country's identity in old-world rooms. In 1917 came the tuberculosis diagnosis. She died in France in 1923, six years later, at 34.
