About
Born in Alma-Ata in 1953, Tokayev trained at Moscow's diplomatic institute and began his career in the Soviet foreign service before joining independent Kazakhstan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1991. He twice served as foreign minister—1994 to 1999 and 2002 to 2007—shaping the country's nuclear disarmament and foreign policy, then moved through prime minister and chairman of the Senate before a stint as Director-General of the UN Office at Geneva from 2011 to 2013.
