Born 16 June 1967, Klopp spent most of his playing career at Mainz 05, shifting from striker to defender before retiring in 2001. He stayed on as manager, earned Bundesliga promotion in 2004, but resigned in 2008 after relegation and a failed bounce-back. At Borussia Dortmund he won the 2010–11 Bundesliga title and then the club's first domestic double in a record-breaking season, plus a Champions League runner-up finish in 2012–13, before departing in 2015 as their longest-serving boss.
