Biography

About

Juan Ramón Jiménez Mantecón was born on 23 December 1881. He wrote relentlessly, building a body of lyrical work that pushed toward what he called "pure poetry" — verse pared to its irreducible core, no ornament, no excess. The concept became one of his lasting marks on modern poetry. In 1956 the Nobel committee gave him the literature prize, citing his high spirit and artistic purity in the Spanish language. He died on 29 May 1958, two years after the recognition arrived.
