Nephew of King of Poland Stanislaus II; Marshal of France (1763-1813)
A Polish prince who spent his final decade fighting for Napoleon — and recovered some of what Poland had lost in the partitions. He drowned in a German river during the retreat from Leipzig, three days after the emperor made him a marshal.
Józef Poniatowski, nephew of Poland's last king, started his career in the Holy Roman Emperor's army and reached colonel by the time he returned to Warsaw in 1789. He won the Battle of Zieleńce against Russia in 1792, resigned when his uncle sided with the pro-Russian faction, then joined the Kościuszko Uprising two years later and oversaw Warsaw's failed defence — which got him exiled until 1798. When Napoleon carved the Duchy of Warsaw from Prussian-held territory in 1807, Poniatowski became its war minister and led a smaller Polish force to victory over Austria in 1809, regaining a slice of…
