John Paul Vann was a United States Army officer and American civilian adviser during the Vietnam War. He served in World War II and the Korean War, retired as a lieutenant colonel in 1963, and returned to South Vietnam in 1965 as a civilian official with the United States Agency for International Development and later Civil Operations and Revolutionary Development Support (CORDS).
