Australia's second-longest-serving prime minister, who held power for eleven years until 2007 when voters ended his run by doing something rare in Westminster systems: they turfed him out of his own seat.

About this person

Born in Sydney in 1939, Howard studied law and worked as a commercial lawyer before entering parliament for Bennelong in 1974. He rose to treasurer by 1977, lost it with Fraser's government in 1983, then led the Liberal Party from 1985 until a loss to Hawke in 1987 cost him the job. Re-elected leader in 1995, he swept to a landslide in 1996 and introduced gun reforms after Port Arthur, then a value-added tax that broke a campaign promise. His government nearly lost in 1998, trailed in 2001 polls until September 11 and a hardline turn on asylum seekers reversed his fortunes, and he won again in 2004. By 2007, the WorkChoices industrial laws had soured the public, Labor's Kevin Rudd won, and Howard became only the second prime minister to lose his own seat - Bennelong went to Maxine McKew, and he retired.
