, I pray every day and I think everybody should. I don't think you can be up here and look out the window as I did the first day and look out at the Earth from this vantage point.
Could this have just happened? . . . I can’t believe that ... Some Power put all this into orbit and keeps it there.
To me, there is no greater calling … If I can inspire young people to dedicate themselves to the good of mankind, I've accomplished something.

John Herschel Glenn Jr. flew fighter missions in World War II, the Chinese Civil War, and Korea, shooting down three MiG-15s and earning six Distinguished Flying Crosses. In 1957 he made the first supersonic transcontinental flight across the United States, his on-board camera capturing the first continuous panoramic photograph of the country. Picked as one of the Mercury Seven in 1959, he launched on February 20, 1962, becoming the third American in space and the first to orbit the Earth. He resigned from NASA in 1964, won a Senate seat from Ohio in 1974, and served twenty-four years. In 1998, while still in office, he flew on Space Shuttle Discovery's STS-95 mission - the only person to fly in both Mercury and the Shuttle programs, and the oldest human to reach orbit. He died in 2016 at ninety-five, the last of the Mercury Seven.
