About this person

Johannes Rau was born on 16 January 1931 and built his career in the Social Democratic Party through the postwar decades. In 1978 he became Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia, the industrial heartland, and held that post for twenty years - long enough to serve twice as President of the Bundesrat, in 1982-1983 and again in 1994-1995. In 1999 he moved to the federal presidency, a role he occupied until 2004. He died on 27 January 2006, ten days after his seventy-fifth birthday.
