German politician (SPD), 8th president of Germany from 1999 until 2004 (1931–2006)
He held Germany's presidency through the millennium turn — a Social Democrat who'd spent two decades running the country's most populous state before moving into the ceremonial top job.
Johannes Rau was born on 16 January 1931 and built his career in the Social Democratic Party through the postwar decades. In 1978 he became Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia, the industrial heartland, and held that post for twenty years — long enough to serve twice as President of the Bundesrat, in 1982–1983 and again in 1994–1995. In 1999 he moved to the federal presidency, a role he occupied until 2004. He died on 27 January 2006, ten days after his seventy-fifth birthday.
