About

Johann Wolfgang Döbereiner was born on 13 December 1780 in Germany. He became a professor of chemistry and pharmacy at the University of Jena, where his work began suggesting something no one had yet named: a periodic law governing the chemical elements. His observations of elemental triads — groups of three elements with curious numerical relationships — pointed toward an order that wouldn't be fully articulated for another generation. Alongside that theoretical work, he invented Döbereiner's lamp, the first lighter, a practical device that brought fire at will. He died on 24 March 1849, leav…
