Johan Huizinga was born in the Netherlands on 7 December 1872. He became a historian whose work helped invent modern cultural history, pulling the lens back from kings and battles to the textures of how people thought and lived. His approach treated ideas, art, and daily life as serious historical evidence. He died on 1 February 1945, leaving a method that reshaped the discipline.
