He held one of the Church's stranger double jobs: Bishop of Urgell in Catalonia and, by medieval quirk, co-head-of-state for Andorra—a prince who wore a miter.
Joan-Enric Vives i Sicília was born on 24 July 1949 in Spain. In 2003 he became Bishop of Urgell, a post that carries an ex officio title older than most European borders: episcopal Co-Prince of Andorra. For over two decades he shared sovereignty of the tiny Pyrenean nation, a ceremonial inheritance from feudal compromise. He held both roles until 2025, when he stepped down—ending a long run as one of the few clerics anywhere still wearing a crown, however symbolic.
