Johnson started on motorcycles at age four in El Cajon, California, then tore through off-road racing in the 1990s, winning rookie of the year in three separate series before moving to stock cars in 1998. Jeff Gordon spotted his talent and persuaded Rick Hendrick to sign him for the Winston Cup Series in 2002, with Gordon taking a stake in the car. After finishing fifth in his debut season, Johnson won his first championship in 2006 and then rattled off four more straight through 2010 - the only five-peat in NASCAR history. He added a sixth title in 2013 and a seventh in 2016, pulling even with Petty and Earnhardt. Between 2002 and 2017 he won 83 races, including two Daytona 500s, before moving to IndyCar in 2021.
