Hendrix picked up guitar at 15, spent a year in the Army, then worked his way through the Chitlin' Circuit backing the Isley Brothers and Little Richard until 1965. Late in 1966 he moved to England under the management of Chas Chandler, formed the Jimi Hendrix Experience with Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell, and landed three UK top-ten hits in months. His 1967 appearance at Monterey Pop made him famous in the States; by 1968 Electric Ladyland hit number one and he became the world's highest-paid rock musician.
