James Norman Mattis was born September 8, 1950, commissioned through ROTC after Central Washington University, and built a Marine career marked by a reputation for intellectualism rare among peers. He commanded in the Gulf War, Afghanistan, and Iraq, eventually rising to lead Joint Forces Command and serve as NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Transformation from 2007 to 2010, then headed Central Command until retiring in 2013.
