James Norman Mattis was born September 8, 1950, commissioned through ROTC after Central Washington University, and built a Marine career marked by a reputation for intellectualism rare among peers. He commanded in the Gulf War, Afghanistan, and Iraq, eventually rising to lead Joint Forces Command and serve as NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Transformation from 2007 to 2010, then headed Central Command until retiring in 2013. Trump tapped him as secretary of defense in 2017; Mattis reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to South Korea during the North Korea crisis and opposed collaboration with China and Russia, warning of threats to American-led order. He clashed quietly with the administration over the Iran deal withdrawal, climate monitoring cuts, and troop pullouts, and reportedly talked Trump out of assassinating Bashar al-Assad. On December 20, 2018, unable to reverse the Syria withdrawal decision, Mattis resigned effective February's end - then Trump moved the date to January 1, 2019, saying he'd essentially fired him.
