Jennifer Maria Capriati made her professional debut in 1990 at 13 years, 11 months, reaching the Boca Raton final and then the French Open semifinals on debut. By October she was the youngest player ever to crack the top 10, at 14 years, 235 days. She won Olympic gold at the 1992 Barcelona Games, then the wheels came off: a first-round loss at the 1993 US Open, a 14-month break, arrests for shoplifting and marijuana possession, and years away from championship form. In 1998 she won her first major-level singles match in five years at Wimbledon; in 1999 she took Strasbourg, her first title in six years. At the 2001 Australian Open she became the lowest seed ever to win the championship, beating Martina Hingis in straight sets, then claimed the French Open and the world No. 1 ranking that October. She defended her Australian Open crown in 2002 and held a top-10 spot until injuries ended the run in 2004. She was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2014.
