He was previously director of the Dibner Institute for the History of Science and Technology at MIT. He won a MacArthur Fellowship in 1995, was elected to the American Philosophical Society and to be a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2011, and was awarded the 2023 Koyré Medal.
