Marshal of France (1769-1809)
Napoleon called him a pygmy he left a giant — one of the few men allowed to use "tu" with the emperor, close enough to break protocol, good enough that historians still argue he was the best of all the marshals.
Born 10 April 1769, Lannes rose through the wars of the Revolution and became one of Napoleon's marshals, eventually named 1st Duke of Montebello and Prince of Siewierz. He fought through both the Revolutionary and Napoleonic campaigns with a combination of audacity and tactical brilliance that set him apart even in that company. The friendship with Napoleon was real — rare permission to use the informal "tu" in an empire built on hierarchy. He died 31 May 1809, still climbing, still at the edge of the fight.
