About this person

Jawed Karim was born October 28, 1979, a software engineer of Bangladeshi descent who grew up between Germany and America. At PayPal he designed core systems including the real-time anti-fraud architecture, and there he met Steve Chen and Chad Hurley. The three co-founded YouTube, and on April 23, 2005, Karim stood in front of the elephant enclosure at the San Diego Zoo and recorded "Me at the zoo" - 18 seconds that became the site's inaugural upload. While Chen and Hurley steered the company through its explosion and its sale to Google, Karim stepped back from operations early, his legacy sealed by that first awkward clip and the platform's architecture beneath it.
