Pérez de Cuéllar was a Peruvian diplomat who became the UN's fifth secretary-general in 1982, just as the Cold War's final act began. Over the next nine years he worked the Iran-Iraq War, tried to untangle Cyprus and Western Sahara, helped negotiate Namibian independence under the Tripartite Accord, and watched the Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan. The Gulf War and the opening shots of Croatia's independence war closed out his tenure in 1991. He returned to Peru and served a single year as prime minister from 2000 to 2001. He died in Lima in 2020 at 100.
