Summary
Updated 2026-06-19

Jarmila Kratochvílová is a Czechoslovak former track and field athlete. She was the 1980 Olympic silver medalist in the 400 metres. In 1983, she set the world record for the 800 metres, which still stands and is currently the longest-standing world record in athletics. Only three athletes, Pamela Jelimo of Kenya (2008), Caster Semenya of South Africa (2018), and Audrey Werro of Switzerland (2026) have come within a second of Kratochvílová's mark since it was set.
