Jane Squire

Jane Squire was an English mathematician who was the only known woman to have participated openly in the 18th-century debates and discussions over the solution to finding longitude at sea. She was one of only two who submitted schemes with the aim of receiving a reward under the 1714 Longitude Act. This work was especially important during the 18th century, when the British Empire depended heavily on the sea for trade, travel, and governing colonies.
