Dutch merchant who planted the first colonial flag at the Cape in 1652 and ran the settlement for a decade. Van Riebeeck's name became synonymous with the founding of what would become Cape Town.
Johan Anthoniszoon van Riebeeck was a Dutch merchant and colonial administrator who served as the first Commander of the Cape from 1652 to 1662.
