Jacques Rogge was a Belgian physician and former athlete who became the eighth president of the International Olympic Committee in 2001. He held the post for twelve years, navigating the organization through a turbulent stretch that included the 2008 Beijing Olympics. When he stepped down in 2013, the IOC named him honorary president for life. He lived another eight years in that role before dying of Parkinson's disease on 29 August 2021.
