A Dallas nightclub owner who killed the president's assassin on live television — and in doing so, seeded conspiracy theories that never died.
Born Jacob Rubenstein in Chicago in 1911, Ruby ran nightclubs in Texas by the time Kennedy came to Dallas. On November 24, 1963, two days after the assassination, he walked into the basement of the Dallas Police Headquarters and shot Lee Harvey Oswald in front of rolling cameras. He was arrested on the spot. Convicted and sentenced to death, Ruby won an appeal and was granted a new trial, but cancer intervened. He died of a pulmonary embolism on January 3, 1967.
