About this person

Born in Middletown, Ohio, Vance enlisted in the Marines in 2003 and served as a military journalist before earning degrees from Ohio State and Yale Law School. After a stint in corporate law, he worked for Peter Thiel's venture capital firm Mithril Capital. His 2016 memoir, Hillbilly Elegy, arrived as scholars scrambled to decode Trump's election and became a surprise bestseller, later adapted into a 2020 film. He'd originally opposed Trump's candidacy but reversed course, converting to Roman Catholicism in 2019 and winning a 2022 Senate seat in Ohio with Trump's endorsement after a crowded primary. Two years later Trump picked him as running mate; he resigned from the Senate before his 2025 inauguration as the 50th vice president. He now chairs the Republican National Committee's finance operation and has drawn criticism from two popes for what they call distortions of Catholic teaching - while positioning himself as a national conservative voice opposing immigration, abortion, same-sex marriage, gun control, Ukraine aid, and voluntary childlessness.
