Born 2 February 1946, Isaias Afwerki joined the Eritrean Liberation Front in 1966, rose to lead it by 1970, then defected to form the Eritrean People's Liberation Front. He consolidated control and commanded pro-independence forces to victory on 24 May 1991, ending three decades of war against Ethiopia. Two years later he was elected president of the newly independent Eritrea and chairman of the People's Front for Democracy and Justice in 1994.
