Queen consort of Portugal (1470-1498)
She was born to rule Spain — eldest daughter and heir to Ferdinand and Isabella — but ended up queen of Portugal instead, through marriage to Manuel I. The crown she was raised for never touched her head.
Born on 2 October 1470, Isabella of Aragon entered the world as Princess of Asturias, first child of the Catholic Monarchs who were busy uniting Spain. She carried the weight of succession from birth, groomed as heiress presumptive to two kingdoms. On 30 September 1497 she married Manuel I and became Queen of Portugal, a union that redirected her destiny from Spanish throne to Portuguese consort. The marriage lasted less than a year. She died on 23 August 1498, eleven months after her wedding, the Spanish inheritance passing to others.
